Lesson 12 min

Automated trading in plain words

A trading bot is a program that follows fixed rules, every second the market is open. Here is what that means for you.

A trading bot watches prices and opens and closes trades by itself, following rules its developers wrote and tested. It does not get tired, nervous or greedy, and it does not need you at the screen.

SmartBot connects its bots to a MetaTrader 5 (MT5) account, the trading platform brokers use around the world. You open that account at the broker in your own name, and your money stays there.

So there are three parts: SmartBot is the software, the broker holds your money, and you stay in control. You choose the bot and its mode, and you can follow every trade in the app.

Key points

  • The bot trades, you decide
  • Your money stays at the broker, in your name
  • Every trade is visible in MT5 and in the app

How SmartBot works, step by step

From sign-up to the first trade in five steps. Most people finish in one evening, with help from the team on our live calls.

  1. Create your free SmartBot account

Sign up with the link on this page. It costs nothing, and you can look at every bot in the dashboard before you decide anything.

  2. Open your broker account

Open an MT5 account at AVO Markets, SmartBot's partner broker, through the link in the app, and complete the broker's identity check.

  3. Choose a bot and a mode

Pick a bot and a Conservative or Progressive mode. Most people start with Conservative.

  4. Fund your account

Deposit from an account or wallet in your own name, and only money you can afford to lose.

  5. Follow the results

The bot trades on your account. You follow every trade in the app and in MT5, and you withdraw through your broker.

Lesson 33 min

Meet the bots

SmartBot has six bots: three scalpers, two flow bots and the Premium Bot. Every bot runs in one of two modes.

Scalping bots

Impulse, Turbo and Nitro Scalper open many short trades and aim to collect small price moves.

  • Impulse Scalper
  • Turbo Scalper
  • Nitro Scalper

Flow bots

AlphaFlow and OrderFlow follow breakouts and the flow of orders in the market: a different approach from the scalpers.

  • AlphaFlow
  • OrderFlow

Premium Bot

The sixth bot adds a filter against stop hunts and fake breakouts.

  • Premium Bot

Two modes: Conservative and Progressive

ConservativeSmaller positions and a calmer ride. Results build more slowly, and losses also come more slowly.
ProgressiveLarger positions that aim for more profit. When the market turns against the bot, losses come faster too.

Illustration of the idea, not real results.

Built-in protection

All bots use a trend filter, a volatility filter that pauses during news spikes, and a hard stop at a fixed drawdown. Filters reduce risk; they do not remove it.

Lesson 43 min

Leverage and risk, made simple

Leverage lets a small deposit move a much larger position. Try the calculator to see what that means in real numbers.

Position you could control$250,000
Price move against you that would use up the whole margin0.2%

A simplified example of one position that uses the full margin. It shows the principle, not how a SmartBot bot sizes its trades. Brokers usually close positions before the margin is fully used (stop-out).

Leverage magnifies losses exactly as much as gains. That is why the mode you choose and the amount you deposit matter more than anything else.

Three rules we teach everyone

  1. Only deposit money you can afford to lose completely.
  2. Start small and in Conservative mode, then decide with real results in front of you.
  3. Never borrow money to trade, and never send money to anyone who promises returns.

Trading leveraged CFDs is high risk. You can lose all the money you deposit. Nothing here is investment advice.

Lesson 52 min

Reading results honestly

Numbers about trading bots are easy to misread. Four ideas help you judge any result, including ours.

Backtest or live?

A backtest replays a strategy on past prices. A live record shows real trades on a real account. Live records count more, and neither predicts the future.

Win rate is not profit

A bot can win most of its trades and still lose money when a few losing trades are large. Look at profit and drawdown together.

Drawdown

The largest drop of the account from a high point. It shows what a bad period felt like. Ask yourself whether you could sit through it calmly.

Time and conditions

A few good weeks say little. Look at months, and at how a bot did when markets were nervous.

Everything you need to know, in 8 short chapters

How SmartBot works, what it costs and what the risks are. Read it in ten minutes and decide with confidence.

  1. What SmartBot is

SmartBot is free software that runs automated trading bots on your own MetaTrader 5 (MT5) account at a partner broker. It places trades for you 24 hours a day, five days a week. SmartBot never holds your money: your funds stay in an account in your own name at the broker.

  2. The bots and their modes

There are six bots. Three scalping bots (Impulse, Turbo and Nitro Scalper) open many short trades. Two flow bots (AlphaFlow and OrderFlow) follow breakouts and order flow. The sixth is the Premium Bot. Every bot runs in a Conservative or a Progressive mode. Settings that aim for more profit also lose faster.

  3. How the bots protect your account

All bots use a trend filter, a volatility filter that pauses during news spikes, and a hard stop at a fixed drawdown. The Premium Bot adds a filter against stop hunts and fake breakouts. Filters reduce risk; they do not remove it.

  4. The broker and your account

You open the broker account yourself and complete its identity checks: an ID document, proof of address less than three months old and a selfie. You deposit from an account or wallet in your own name and request withdrawals from the broker. The partner broker is AVO Markets.

  5. What it really costs

There is no subscription, no setup fee and no commission on the lots you trade. SmartBot and its partners are paid from a 30% share of your net trading profits at AVO Markets. As at any broker, the buy and sell prices differ by a small spread.

  6. Leverage, in one example

With leverage of 1:500, a small deposit controls a position 500 times larger. A price move of about 0.2% against that position can use up its whole margin. Leverage magnifies losses exactly as much as gains.

  7. What can go wrong

Bots can lose money, and losing periods happen. Backtests and past results do not predict the future. AVO Markets Ltd. is a Saint Lucia company that states it is not regulated by any financial regulator, it is the counterparty to your trades, and clients have no compensation scheme. SmartBot's website says withdrawals from capital in a PAMM need SmartBot's confirmation: ask how this applies to your account before you deposit.

  8. Who can join

You must be 18 or older. Residents of the United States, Australia, Singapore, Saint Lucia, sanctioned countries and regions (including Russia, Belarus, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba, Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk) and FATF high-risk countries cannot open an account. Check that trading with an offshore broker is lawful where you live, and handle your own taxes.

The partner plan

Partners earn weekly from the trading revenue of the clients they refer: twelve levels (10% on the first level down to 1% on the twelfth) plus VIP ranks based on team volume. There are no joining fees.

Glossary

The words you will hear on the calls, in one place.

MetaTrader 5 (MT5)
The trading platform where your account lives. The bots trade through it, and you can see every trade in its app.
Broker
The company that holds your trading account and your money, and carries out the trades.
Leverage
Trading a position larger than your deposit. 1:500 means 1 dollar of margin moves a position of 500 dollars.
Margin
The part of your deposit the broker sets aside to keep a position open.
Lot
The unit of trade size. One standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency.
Spread
The small difference between the buy price and the sell price. It is one of the broker's costs.
Drawdown
The drop from the account's highest point to a later low, usually shown in percent.
Backtest
A test of a strategy on past prices. Useful to understand a bot, but not a promise.
Scalping
A trading style that opens many short trades to collect small price moves.
Stop-out
The level at which the broker closes positions because too little margin is left.
PAMM
An account set-up in which one strategy trades for many investors. SmartBot's website says withdrawals from capital in a PAMM need SmartBot's confirmation.
Referral code
The code in your sign-up link. It tells SmartBot which partner introduced you, so that partner can help you.
